Random Musings on Things that have Meaning

Random musings on a blustery day.

Thoughts from Susie Ascott on living your Perfect Life

Random Musings

My diary tells me that today I should “Do Some Marketing”… but I think we’d all enjoy it more if I just share some random musings from the day bed on the veranda, as I watch the trees blowing in the wind..

I’ve been thinking about what I’ve been doing over the last few weeks and what has brought me the most contentment, joy and energy; the most meaning . For me, it comes down to

  • “daily practices”  for the physical body, the mind, the emotions and the spirit, which keep me grounded and present and
  • the many seemingly “simple” things which give me a sense of connection and gratitude.

We don’t all have the luxury of time and solitude to spend hours each day, but it is possible to design a practice that  covers two or more of these aspects at the same time; and, on a busy day, 30 seconds of breathing and expressing gratitude can be your daily practice. One of the many joys of getting older is not being embarrassed when a passer-by smiles as they catch me patting the bonnet of my car and saying “Thank you, Bridget” as I leave her in the car park.
I’d love you to let me know what your practices are.

Other things that have recently brought me joy have been

  • teaching yoga to Year 11 schoolboys and feeling the change in the energy in the room after 15 minutes relaxation.
  • running a workshop for children at the local camp school and seeing the smiles on their faces as they created beautiful dream catchers
  • joining in the warm-up for the Living Longer Living Stronger program at the local Leisure Centre. I so loved being included in the circle as we supported each other in balances and threw balls to each other around the circle.
  • watching the land blossoming after all the rain and the return of sunshine
  • realising I am now on “nodding terms” with the skinks in the garden, as we politely acknowledge each other ( as opposed to freaking out and running noisily in opposite directions)
  • reading – specifically, Listening to the Land Conversations about Nature, Culture and Eros by Derrick Jensen. The book contains  conversations with environmentalists, theologians, Native Americans, psychologists, and feminists, in an exploration of more peaceful ways to live on Earth.
  • coffee and a chat with friends
  • exchanging produce at the Swap Meet

I’m getting more and more convinced that it’s these “little things”  where I feel a sense of connection and interconnection that mean the most. What has brought you the most sense of meaning and joy in the last few weeks?
